Toward the future.

20 01 2009

There has been much about what is happening today.  Barack Obama, a black, liberal man has been elected president, and this scares the bejeezus out of people for some reason.

But in these turbulent times that we are going through, it is not the time for the nay-saying, defamation or partisan bollocks that has lead to the mess that we are in.  Understandably there will be disagreements; no one ever sees things the same way.  That being said, compromise and a desperate need for understanding is truly the only way that we can begin to move forward; not just as a nation, but as people and as a society.

So please, I am begging of all of you out there, on every end of the political spectrum; as things begin to happen i the next year or so, give a chance, and try to find some good out there, or else we are all doomed.

There is nothing that we cannot do together, but through bickering and partisan maneuvering there is no end to the things at which we can fail.

In the words of one of my favorite presidents (Franklin D. Roosevelt) “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself – nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.”

It is this fear, I believe, that will be the defining feature of the next decade as our society, culture, and national might begins to decline in the eyes of the world.  But this will only happen if we let it.  So do not let fear of the unknown be the criteria with which you judge the next while, or we will all be spending time in the same quagmire that we are rapidly approaching, and there is absolutely no need or reason for us to do so.  Indeed, the opportunity that we have to advance in the face of hurt and trouble and strife  is unparalleled in human history, and the only thing that stands in the way of human kind surmounting the obstacles of our history is our own fear of the unknown and hesitation in the face of difficulty.

While there is a danger of repeating our mistakes in discounting the past, perhaps we should use it less as an example as a reason for us to yearn for better, simpler, more peaceful world.  Looking toward the future; toward technology, science, learning, philanthropy and altruism is the way of the future, and the way that we should all be looking in order to make things better for all of us.

Please lets do this, and I hope that everyone who reads this understands that we can do it, but only if we really try.
