Here’s To Endorphins

2 04 2008

I started running again today. IT has been a few months, a few cold, wet, dark months, since I was a regular runner.  At the end of last fall I was around 10-14 miles a week.  not bad for someone who has smoked since the age of 16.  That being said, I have come to realize a few things about running after my hiatus from the aerobic arts:

A) Runing is for suckers.  It’s true.  Whoever thought this up as a way to lose weight and get in shape needs to be hunted down and shot in the street.  When people say that  one of the truest tests of a persons level of dedication is to tell them to start running, they aren’t lying.  It takes everything I have to go out and torture my body for 40 minutes or so every other morning.

B) Endorphins are the best drug there is.  This one needs very little explanation.  Anyone who has worked out so hard that their muscles burn and their heart pumps battery acid knows that when it is all said and done, the way that you feel afterward is  one of the most uplifting and incredible feelings a person can have.  I have to admit I’m a bit of a junkie for that feeling.

C) Running to techno doesnt work.  As an avid fan of mixed music and a DJ, I have a real problem when tempos are off when listening to any kind of techno.  As such, when listening to something with a big, rhythmic beat it is hard for my brain to rectify that my feet are not keeping the same beat as the chunes.  Think of it like that Volkswagen commercial where the music is synced to the windshield wipers, only the wipers are going to slow. That is the kind of thing that will give me an anyurism if prolonged.

D) Happy music is not the kind of music to keep one motivated.  Give me some disturbed.  Gimme some Rage Against the Machine.  Gimme something that makes me angry, something taht gets my heart pumping.  Thats the kind of stuff that will help me stay motivated.

So if running is for suckers, and I  have become addicted to teh feeling of loose, limber, slightly burning muscles, I guess that makes me a sucker.  We’ll just have to see how my dedication level stands up to the test.
